Facebook is a long time admirer of Snapchat having tried to acquire the company for $3 billion in cash back in 2013. The reasoning at the time was clear; Facebook’s market share in the teenage demographic was slipping as more and more new users adopted Snapchat as their social medium of choice. Snapchat ignored the advances which surprised the tech industry and Facebook changed their tactics to cloning the Snapchat model.
In 2014, they launched Slingshot, a direct competitor to the Snapchat model but it didn’t make it past year one. In 2015, Facebook undertook large-scale testing of self-destructing chat in Messenger. They rolled this out further in 2016 and components are still present in Messenger today.
